What is the UTMB Index? A Beginner’s Guide
You don’t have to be a trail runner to have heard of UTMB.
As trail running continues to grow in popularity, more runners are discovering UTMB through friends, social media, and races around the world. You may have also noticed that the 20K at Grit & Grind Trail Series: Camp Fortune Edition is a UTMB Index race.
If you’re curious about what UTMB is, what the UTMB Index means, or why someone might choose to run a UTMB Index race, you’re in the right place.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What is UTMB?
UTMB stands for Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, one of the world’s most recognized trail running events. Starting Chamonix, France, the race takes participants around the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland. Since its first edition in 2003, the event has become one of the most prestigious races in trail running.
Today, UTMB has grown into the UTMB World Series, a global collection of trail running events that welcomes runners of many different abilities and ambitions. While some participants dream of racing in the Alps one day, many others simply enjoy discovering new trails and destinations through UTMB-affiliated races.
What is the UTMB Index?
The UTMB Index is a performance rating designed specifically for trail running.
Unlike road races, where finish times are relatively easy to compare, every trail course is different. Elevation, terrain, technical sections, weather, and trail conditions all influence how a race unfolds.
The UTMB Index helps create a common benchmark by evaluating performances across eligible trail races around the world. Runners receive an Index within one of four distance categories: 20K, 50K, 100K, and 100M, along with an overall UTMB Index as they complete more races.
Why run a UTMB Index race?
For many people, the answer is simple:
It’s a great excuse to try trail running.
Road running and trail running have plenty in common, but they also offer very different experiences. On the trails, you’ll encounter winding singletrack, climbs, descents, changing terrain, and beautiful natural surroundings. Success isn’t measured only by pace. Trail running often encourages runners to focus on problem-solving, adapting to the terrain, and enjoying the journey.
Completing a UTMB Index race also gives you something extra: an official UTMB Index that you can use to measure future performances if you decide to continue exploring the sport.
Does a UTMB Index help you run UTMB Mont-Blanc?
It can.
A valid UTMB Index is one of the requirements for entering the lottery for the UTMB World Series Finals at HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc. Runners must also earn at least one Running Stone, which is collected by finishing a UTMB World Series Event or UTMB World Series Major. UTMB Index races do not award Running Stones, but they do allow runners to establish or update a valid UTMB Index.Â
In other words, the UTMB Index and Running Stones serve different purposes, and both play a role for runners who eventually decide to pursue UTMB Mont-Blanc.
What does this mean for Grit & Grind?
This year, the 20K at Grit & Grind Trail Series: Camp Fortune Edition is officially recognized as a UTMB Index race.
That means participants who complete the race will earn or update a 20K UTMB Index, joining thousands of runners around the world who use the system to track their trail running performances.
More importantly, the race offers an opportunity to experience one of the National Capital Region’s premier trail running destinations.
For some participants, it will be their first trail race. Others will be chasing a new challenge or adding another trail race to their season. Some may even discover a passion that leads to bigger adventures down the road.
Every trail runner starts somewhere. This could be your starting line.
