Getting to know Rory Linkletter: The mindset of an elite runner

Some runners race for the thrill, some for the competition, and others because they simply can’t imagine life without it. Rory Linkletter falls into all three categories. A Canadian elite runner with an impressive resume—including an Olympic appearance—Linkletter is as passionate about the sport as he is about staying present in the moment. Whether he’s tackling a tough training block, racing in front of roaring crowds, or spending time with his family, he brings an easygoing yet fiercely dedicated approach to everything he does. As Linkletter gets ready to race the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon, let’s take a closer look at what makes him tick both on and off the race course.

Balancing life and running

Elite running demands an all-in mentality, but Linkletter knows the importance of stepping away, too. “I compartmentalize, I try to be all in on running, while I’m running, and I try to forget about it when I’m with my kids or family, sometimes it’s easier than others.”

Career-defining moments

Linkletter couldn’t choose just one moment when asked about the experiences that have shaped him as a runner. “Many! I feel like every little breakthrough and set back shapes the runner I am. Making the Olympics last year was certainly one of those moments for me.”

Handling pressure: keeping it light

While nerves or pressure might creep up before a race, once he’s in motion, Linkletter finds that pressure fades away. “During the race I tend to not have much [nerves], leading up to [a race]  is another story, I usually try to just have fun and stay relaxed by talking with friends, competitors, and distracting myself as much as possible.”

Mantras, rituals, and going with the flow

Some runners swear by mantras and rituals, but Linkletter has found that keeping things natural works best for him. “I have dabbled with this in the past, but I feel like at this stage I just stay loose and go with the flow, I tend to start the self talk naturally as the race progresses, nothing scripted.”

Finding motivation and confidence

Staying motivated has never been an issue for Linkletter. “Motivation is easy for me, staying confident is the challenge, I usually just focus on trying to get “wins” where I can find them, sometimes that’s just getting through the tough or the setback.”

Consistency over perfection: Linkletter’s approach to training

Patience and discipline are key, but Linkletter doesn’t believe in a rigid approach. His biggest focus? Consistency—showing up for every run, hitting paces, and not letting obstacles get in the way of progress. The secret isn’t perfection; it’s persistence. “Patience and discipline, and what I mean by that is not to be rigid or robotic, but to be disciplined about following your training. I focus most of my efforts on showing up consistently and not letting things stop me from getting my run in or hitting paces.”

Recovery: Fueling the body and honouring cravings

After a race or hard workout, recovery starts with food. Linkletter follows his cravings, whether that means choosing something nutritious or keeping it simple. For him, refueling isn’t just about replenishing energy—it’s about enjoying the process, too. “Food! I love to eat and drink my way to recovery through healthy or sometimes just simple foods. I try to be intuitive based on my cravings.”

Race day nerves: Fear meets excitement

When asked what goes through his mind on race day, Linkletter shares “I tend to have a mix of fear and excitement, excited about the possibilities, afraid of all the “bad” things that can happen.”

What he’s looking forward to at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend

When asked what excites him about race weekend, the answer is simple: “The crowds and the atmosphere of racing in a familiar and fun place.”

The heart of a competitor, the mind of a champion

Linkletter’s journey as a runner is fueled by passion, resilience, and a deep love for the sport. Whether he’s taking on world-class competition or simply grinding through a training block, he brings the same determined mindset to every run. With the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon around the corner, fans and fellow runners can expect to see Linkletter embrace the moment, push his limits, and most importantly—have fun doing it.
