New Canadian 10K record set in Ottawa

New Canadian 10K record set at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend for second consecutive year

Charles Philibert-Thiboutot and Gracelyn Larkin take top spots in the Ottawa 10K

May 24, 2025 (Ottawa, ON) – The 2025 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend got off to a great—albeit cool and rainy—start today with the Ottawa Kids Marathon, 2K, 5K and 10K presented by Otto’s Ottawa events.

More than 7,200 runners took to the streets of Ottawa for the 10K presented by Otto’s Ottawa. It was the 40th anniversary of the race, with some of the best professional runners in Canada as well as thousands of recreational runners from across the National Capital Region and the country taking part.

Once again this year, Ottawa played host to the Canadian 10K Championships. Athletics Canada, the national governing body for athletics, awarded Ottawa with the prestigious hosting honour for 2024, 2025 and 2026. Last year, Ben Flanagan set a new Canadian 10K Championship record, squeaking past his own Canadian record to finish in 28:09. On the women’s side, Malindi Elmore won her first national title in 15 years, with a near personal best of 32:50.

However, this year, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot captured first place in the men’s category, setting a new Canadian 10K Championship record with a time of 28:06.

In the women’s category, 24-year-old Gracelyn Larkin took top spot, finishing in 32:43. Although Malindi Elmore had a comfortable lead for much of the race, Larkin passed her just before the seven kilometre mark.

Starting at Ottawa City Hall, the 10K course took runners down Elgin street, along the famous Rideau Canal, around Dow’s Lake and back up Colonel By Drive before heading across the Pretoria Bridge to an exciting finish in front of thousands of cheering spectators on Queen Elizabeth Drive.

Events for runners of all ages, levels, and shapes

Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend kicked off Saturday afternoon with six local mascots battling it out in a 100 metre dash for fun:

  • OC’s Transpo’s OC Owl
  • Camp Misquah’s Moose
  • Ottawa Titans’ Cappy
  • Ottawa Redblacks’ Big Joe
  • Ottawa 67s’ Riley
  • Farm Boy’s Lulu the Cow

OC Owl won the annual event for the second year in a row, beating Camp Misquah’s Moose and the other four mascots to the finish line.

After the Mascot Race, 1,650 young runners from 30 schools across the region took part in the sold out Ottawa Kids Marathon. Each of the young runners received their very own medal after crossing the finish line—one of the most heartwarming moments of the day.

Running as part of the Desjardins Charity Challenge

Ottawa’s Hanna Manning didn’t just finish one race today—she ran three. As part of the 17 km Challenge, she completed the 2K, 5K and 10K. In 2023, Manning was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of just 32. Last year, she was able to walk the Ottawa 5K at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. This year, Manning ran all 17 km in the hopes of increasing awareness about early cancer detection. She also raised $1,600 for cancer research at the Ottawa Hospital Foundation as part of the Desjardins Charity Challenge.

Kristy Goss also ran the 2K, 5K, 10K—and plans to run the full marathon on Sunday. In 2021, the ultramarathoner donated a kidney. Today, she ran the 5km race alongside Katie Skidmore, a kidney recipient making her return to running after acute kidney failure in 2023. The pair were running to raise money for the Kidney Foundation of Canada—and to demonstrate that life has no limits post kidney donation.

Since 2009, Partners Investing in Parkinson Research, or Team PIPR, has been taking part in the Desjardins Charity Challenge to raise funds for Parkinson research. This year, they reached the $2 million mark, with more than 100 people joining the group to participate in the 2K event.

Other fundraising teams of note this year were BGC Ottawa’s Walk this Way and Start2Finish, which had more than 160 and 250 team members, respectively.
