Registration now open for LIVE Run to EMPower on October 2

Ottawa, July 14, 2021 – The organizers at Run Ottawa are ecstatic to announce that registration is now open for its first live in-person race in more than 16 months. Run to EMpower is set to take place October 2, 2021 at the Experimental Farm. The event includes a 5K performance race for women only, and an Open 5K for all genders.

The race, which was originally named Émilie’s Run, has been held annually since 2005. It was inspired by Emilie Mondor, the first Canadian female to run a sub-15:00 5K and a member of Canada’s 2004 Olympic team. Émilie Mondor empowered a new generation of Canadian women to run fast and own their place on the podium. She died tragically at the age of 25.

The evolution of ‘Emilie’s Run’ to ‘Run to EMpower’ was inspired by Emilie’s advancement of women’s running in Canada, her perseverance through her own battles and her support of female runners of all abilities.

Two events are planned to take place on October 2nd.

  1. Ottawa’s fastest women 5K is a performance race for all women 12+ (cisgender and transgender) who have run a sub 22:00 5K after September 1, 2018, or run an acceptable/equivalent result. The top runner will win $500. There are also bonuses for breaking the event record and Emilie Mondor’s record, set in 2004. This event currently is capped at 75 participants.
  2. Emilie’s Open 5K is open to all genders aged 12+. This event is currently capped at 375 participants.

Like with the 2021 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, registrants will have an option to opt into  the Green Bib program and donate the cost of their medal to a charity. For this event, organizers have chosen to partner with Cornerstone Housing for Women, which provides emergency shelter and safe affordable permanent housing for women in Ottawa.

Registration is now open at www.runottawa.ca
