Start your Canada Day off on the “right foot” with the 2019 Canada Day Road Races!

Whether you’re just looking to have fun, or even if you crave a little competition, kicking off Canada Day at Run Ottawa’s Canada Day Road Races is the best way to get the whole family active and in the spirit to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Joe DuVall, Event Operations Manager of Run Ottawa and Race Director of the annual Canada Day races in Kanata is looking forward to July 1st, rain or shine. “There’s something for everyone, from Mom and Dad to toddlers and everyone in between,” he says.

And it’s true. For 33 years, the Canada Day Road Races have been one of the most family friendly events, with races for all ages – including for those who happen to be under 5!

That’s right, the Tot Trot puts your littlest ones in the heart of the action with a 100 metre “dash” (though for new walkers, it’s more of a waddle.) Better yet, everyone gets their own commemorative medal, a first for some of the youngest participants! Then there’s the 1K race for kids aged 6 to 12, which comes with a youth shirt and is timed by Spotstats, just like the 5K and 10K.

For those taking on the challenge of the 10K or 5K, there are a combination of cash prizes and gift certificates to be won, but prize money and bragging rights aside, there will be other great activities to look forward to.

“You can expect free face painting, kids attractions like a bouncy-castle obstacle course, and a national anthem performance by singer/songwriter Mallory Williams,” explains DuVall.

Run Ottawa keeps the logistics simple. Race Kit pick up is available starting June 29th and 30th at the Westboro or Hazeldean Bushtukah locations, or you can do pickup at 7 a.m. on the day of the races. Free parking and baggage check for the event make it all a breeze.

What to pack? “You’ll want to have sunscreen on hand,” advises DuVall. “Maybe bring a Canadian flag or two. Bring your own water bottles to fill up at the Aqua Haulics water station, but post race snacks in the recovery zone are included with every registration!”

This year, First Aid on the grounds is generously provided by the Canadian Ski Patrol who will be safeguarding the health of all runners. As with all Run Ottawa events, volunteers are always appreciated! If you’d like to lend a hand at the Canada Day Road Races, get in touch directly through questions@runottawa.ca.
