Introducing the Run to EMpower – Ottawa’s Fastest Womxn 5K
The race inspired by the late Emilie Mondor is a rebrand of Émilie’s Run
February 25, 2020 – Ottawa – Run Ottawa is pleased to announce it will host the Run to EMpower on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at the Experimental Farm. The event will include a womxn’s performance race (open to anyone who identifies as a woman and can run under 28:00), an Open 5K, and a 1K kids run.
The evolution of ‘Émilie’s Run’ to ‘Run to EMpower’ was inspired by Émilie Mondor’s advancement of womxn’s running in Canada, her perseverance through her own battles and her support of all runners.
Émilie Mondor was the first Canadian female to run a sub-15:00 5K, and a member of Canada’S 2004 Olympic team. Her career was cut short when she died tragically at the age of 25 in a car accident.
“We wanted to continue to honour Émilie’s memory by offering an inclusive performance race for womxn that would enable us to highlight remarkable local and national talent,” said Ian Fraser, Executive Director of Run Ottawa. “Women’s running in Canada has been on fire recently, with records toppling in all distances.“
The Run to EMpower will offer three events:
1. Ottawa’s Fastest Womxn 5K – The performance race is open to all ages and to anyone who identifies as a womxn.
Participants must be able to complete the 5K in under 28 minutes. The winner will take home a $1,000 prize, and the top 5 finishers will receive a complimentary entry to the Canadian 10K Championships to be held at the Ottawa 10K on May 23.
2. Émilie’s Open 5K – All ages and genders are welcome. This is a race where everyone can celebrate womxn’s running – fathers with their daughters, friends and partners with one another.
3. Little Warriors Kids Run 1K – For kids ages 4 to 12.
