Capital XC Challenge featuring the Jim Howe Memorial 6K Cross Country Races
Autumn is a popular season for many, with the advent of its beautiful colours and cooler temperatures. However, runners welcome autumn because it means ‘cross-country season, and the opportunity to race off road.
Run Ottawa is partnering with the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club to stage the ‘Capital XC Challenge.’ This two-day event features the Eastern Ontario Elementary School Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning and a high school meet on Friday afternoon, October 13th. The featured event is the Jim Howe Memorial 6K Cross Country Races on Saturday afternoon, October 14. Named in honour of Dr. Jim Howe, a long-time runner and respected member of the community, it is a classic cross-country race. The surface will be vary and may include grass (including potential muddy sections), gravel trails, obstacles and track surfaces at the finish.

Men’s 6K – 2:30 p.m.
Women’s 6K – 3:00 p.m.
(organizers reserve the right to stage the men’s and women’s race together. Revised start time would be 3:00 p.m.)

University/college athletes and open teams have a special rate of $15 per athlete ($30 on race day) with a maximum fee of $100 per team

Jim Howe Memorial Races Course Information
The race distance is 6K and is comprised of 2 small loops, 2 large loops and the finish stretch on the synthetic track. The surfaces include a small paved section, mud and grass surfaces, several curbs and obstacles along the course. These conditions make this event unsuitable for wheelchair racing.
Not Wheelchair Racing Suitable – This race takes place on both paved, mud and grass surfaces, and has several curbs and obstacles along the course. These conditions make this event not suitable for wheelchair racing. Wheelchairs are not permitted.
Awards will be given to the top 20 individual race finishers. Awards to the top three teams (seven deep) and cash prizes will be given to the top three schools in the men’s and women’s division.
1st Place – $500
2nd Place – $300
3rd Place – $200
Awards presentation will take place immediately at the end of the race.
