Kenyan Mary Keitany breaks 10K course record, wins gender competition

Fellow Kenyan Wilson Kiprop finishes first in men’s race

May 24, 2014 (Ottawa) – Two Kenyans entered the record books tonight as winners of the Lowertown Brewery 10K race in the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

Making good on race organizers’ predictions that course records could fall this year, 32-year-old Mary Keitany finished with a time of 31:21:7 minutes, 3 seconds faster than the course record set in 2005.

Keitany also won the gender competition tonight, which sees women elite racers start the course 4 minutes and 10 seconds before their male counterparts. She takes home $4,000 for finishing before the men elites, $6,000 for being the first woman finisher overall, and 2,000 for breaking the course record, for a total of $12,000.

“We knew we had strong fields for both men and women athletes going into the race,” said Manny Rodrigues, Elite Athlete Coordinator for the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. “In Mary’s case tonight, she had a strong second half, widening the gap from second place finisher Ruti Aga at the 5K mark to finish the race with a negative split.”

Kenyan Wilson Kiprop, 27, handily won top spot in the men’s division, finishing with a time of 28:00:7. He was followed by fellow countrymen 29-year-old David Kogei with a time of 28:06:6 and Geoffrey Mutai, 32, with 28:08:2. Mutai is no stranger to Ottawa, having won the race in 2012 and placing third in 2013.

First Canadian man to cross the finish line was Dylan Wykes, 30, of Vancouver, with a time of 29:40:0. He placed ninth overall.  Lanni Marchant, also 30, placed seventh overall and was the first Canadian woman to cross the finish line with 33:14:8. Four Canadian women placed in the top 10 finishers, and 13 of the top 20 women finishers were Canadian.
