Canadian soil record broken at Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon
Ethiopians dominate top spots

May 25, 2014 (Ottawa) – Three records were broken today at the 40th running of the Scotiabank Marathon of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

Yemane Tsegay, 29, of Ethiopia, broke two records with his finish time of 2:06:54 – the men’s Canadian soil record of 2:07:05 set last year in Toronto and the Ottawa marathon course record of 2:08:04 also set in 2013.

Tigist Tufa, 27, also from Ethiopia, broke the course record for women with a time of 2:24:31. The previous course record of 2:25:30 was set in 2013.

“We are thrilled with today’s results,” says Manny Rodrigues, Elite Athlete Coordinator for the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. “Bringing together a very competitive field of world-class racers and breaking the Canadian soil and Ottawa course records take our marathon event to a whole new level on the international racing scene.”

Winners of this year’s Canadian National Champions were Eric Gills, 34, of Guelph, with a time of 2:13:47 and Rhiannon Johns, with a time of 2:47:11.
