This year the Pfizer Health and Fitness Expo is located at the new Ottawa Convention Centre, overlooking the Rideau Canal. It’s the perfect place to get inspired, both by the beauty of Ottawa’s historic downtown and by the range of running and health info, merchandise and product samples on offer. For example, you can consult with one of the nutritionists or personal trainers on hand to gather new ideas on how to achieve your next PB. Or if you’re a gear hound, check out all the cool stuff supplied by the Running Room, including the new Timex Ironman Run Trainer (more on this below). Whatever your taste, there’s sure to be something that will catch your attention at the Pfizer Health and Fitness Expo! And after working up a thirst touring the Expo, go ahead and wander over to the Festival Plaza to sample the new Michelob Ultra Beer from Labatt. After all that hard training, you deserve it.
Race Kit PickupPlease note that participants need to pick up their race kits prior to their event. Race kits will be available for pickup during the posted Expo hours. Runners unable to pick up their race kits prior to their event can feel free to get a friend or family member to pick it up for them. As a virtual race simulator/training tool, RaceMyRace allows you to tour the course in either 2D (Google Maps) or 3D (Google Earth) – the 3D is particularly cool. You will come to Ottawa. You will run many kilometers in a relatively short period of time. You will sweat profusely and burn many carbs. Which is why re-fuelling stations along the course will be stocked with plenty of PowerBar Energy Gels – to help you replenish lost energy and electrolytes in a hurry. And this year we have Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry Banana or Double Latte flavours to choose from – so they’re delicious and effective. The perfect way to re-energize your body and boost your performance on race day.
For the first time, organizers have added a visually impaired 10K race to the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend, making Ottawa’s signature sporting event even more inclusive. Two local organizations, Achilles Ottawa and Won with One, were instrumental in organizing this newest race, and they couldn’t be more excited for the chance to bring positive exposure to visually impaired running in the city.
In 2010, a group of local visually impaired athletes founded the Ottawa chapter of Achilles International. Achilles Ottawa is one of several Canadian chapters to support the participation of people with disabilities in mainstream sport. The club holds regular group runs and encourages participation in local road races in keeping with its central philosophy of leveraging sport to bring the joy of achievement to people of all abilities.
"The Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend is a fabulous opportunity for our runners to participate in such a big event in the Ottawa running scene," said Paralympian and President of Achilles Ottawa, Jason Dunkerley. “We’re thrilled to be a part of it.”
Won with One is a national non-profit organization that promotes the personal development of blind and visually impaired people using triathlon as a catalyst for change. Founded in 2010 by Executive Director Jan Ditchfield, Won with One matches visually impaired athletes with sighted guides and supports the athletic pursuits of their team members through personalized training and peer mentoring.
“The support that our organizations have received from the local sighted athletic community is humbling,” said Ditchfield. “We’re very excited for this year’s race.”And so are the organizers of The Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend. Indeed, we’re excited and proud to be associated with such dedicated endurance athletes. And we recognize that the visually impaired 10K and other similar races are important. More races for visually impaired runners need to happen – not only in Ottawa, but also in other cities around the world.
