We are thrilled to announce that new this year, the efforts of our youngest marathoners will help support the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). The Scotiabank Ottawa Kids Marathon in support of CHEO is a chance for children to take part in the excitement of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, the largest multi-race running event in Canada and an opportunity to spearhead a practise of regular physical activity that is fun, rewarding and great for their health and self-confidence!
In the Scotiabank Ottawa Kids Marathon for CHEO, runners accumulate the equivalent of one kilometre to complete a total of 41km prior to race day. Activities such as running, soccer, cross country skiing, basketball or hockey are tabulated in half hour increments. For every half hour of activity, one kilometre is marked down on an official tracker sheet. On race day itself the young marathoners line up on the start line to run the last 1 km of their marathon and get a taste for the exhilaration of running!
"CHEO has done so much for the health of children in Eastern Ontario, and Scotiabank's commitment to charitable causes has made a real difference in communities across the country," said John Halvorsen, Race Director, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. "We're honoured to have the opportunity to use our popular Kids Marathon to work with Scotiabank and help raise funds for the CHEO Foundation, and make a real difference for children in Eastern Ontario."
Whether you're prepping for an upcoming race or you want a fun, low-key event as a change of pace, Run Ottawa is sure to have an event to suit your running needs. Here are a few of our events to put on your calendar this season.
Beaver Chase Series (photo: Ian Hunt)
The Beaver Chase Running Series starts on Tuesday, May 13th at 6:30 p.m. leaving from the new Richcraft Recreation Complex in Kanata North. The series then continues with monthly events on June 17th, July 8th and August 12th. Come run a 6K or 2K route at your own pace through the Monk Conservation Trail and local communities. There is a water station, plenty of support and we have access to the facilities inside the RRC. All registration is on the day of the event, starting at 5:45 p.m.
Like the Beaver Chase Series, our Saturday 5K Run Series is geared for all ages—and it's free! Charge up an early weekend morning by testing your fitness or running with friends (or both) over a fun 5K at the Central Experimental Farm. There are distance markers, a water station and times are recorded. We have even been known to give away randomly drawn prizes as part of the experience. The first 5K is Saturday, April 5th at 9:00 a.m. with subsequent events happening on the first Saturday of each month for the remainder of the year (except November).
The Canada Day Road Races event has been staple of the Ottawa running scene since 1987. Staged at Earl of March High School in Kanata, there are races for the whole family including competitive 5K and 10K events and a 100 metre tot trot and 1.5K fun run for the kids. Races start at 8:00 a.m. and wind up by 10:00 a.m. Kick off your holiday with this fun family event and by 10:30 a.m. you will be on your way with the rest of Canada Day still ahead of you.
