There's Still Time to Run For a Reason!

With Ottawa Race Weekend fast approaching, your training is likely under control (or at the very least, started). But how’s your fundraising going?

There’s still time to fundraise for The Ottawa Hospital through Run for a Reason. One in two people will be touched by the Hospital this year – why not consider supporting an area of the Hospital that means something to you? Already, hundreds of your fellow runners and community members are supporting cancer care, cancer research, and our neonatal intensive care unit, to name a few. Join them in making a difference!

If you have friends and family who aren’t registered to run this year, tell them that they can still get involved, either by sponsoring you, or signing up to fundraise as a “virtual” or “honorary” runner. And remember, when you raise $250 for the Hospital area of your choice, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation will refund your race fee!

On May 26 and 27, make a difference in the life of someone you know who will use the services of The Ottawa Hospital this year. Sign up to fundraise by clicking here.

Lace Up With TEAM MS!!

The MS Society of Canada, Ottawa Chapter is delighted to be a Partner Charity for the 2012 Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend. We look forward to being a presence at this exciting event and bringing awareness of multiple sclerosis and its effect on our community.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40, we know that it affects children, some as young as two years old. The impact is felt by family, friends and by the community. MS is unpredictable, often affecting vision, hearing, memory, balance and mobility. Its effects are physical, emotional, financial, and last a lifetime. There is currently no cure but ongoing research continues to offer hope that one day we will end MS.

In addition to funding the most promising research, the Ottawa Chapter offers a variety of programs and services to assist persons affected. These programs include financial assistance, equipment purchase and loan, recreation, support and wellness groups, informational and referral and education.

How can you help? Join TEAM MS for the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend and run with us! Raise funds and make a difference. To sign up, visit our website at mssociety.ca/ottawa. All runners will receive some goodies, including a running hat and red shoelaces with the MS logo to wear on race day if they choose! Prizes are also offered for fundraising. We look forward to having you lace up with us!

Run With Team Diabetes!

Walk or run with Team Diabetes in the Tamarack Homes Ottawa Race Weekend and make a difference in your life and the lives of the 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes!

The Ottawa Marathon is one of the most popular events on our calendar and as a result, hundreds of Ottawa participants have raised over $392,000! This incredible amount is part of the $32 million our dedicated team members have raised for the Canadian Diabetes Association since 2000.

These funds support our many initiatives including $7 million of research annually, education, advocacy and summer camps across Canada for children with type 1 diabetes. In addition to fundraising, team members increase awareness about diabetes in their communities and have made a commitment to their own health by leading a more active lifestyle.

There is still much to be done though so we need you to join our team! You don't have to be an athlete to sign up. Choose the distance that's right for you and raise funds. In return we provide you with guaranteed race entry (including the sold out half marathon), our coveted team shirt, a personalized, fundraising web page and more. It's that easy!

Don't miss your chance to be part of this great event. Register on-line by April 5th at www.teamdiabetes.ca and help the Canadian Diabetes Association lead the fight against diabetes!

Unable to participate but want to support the Association? We gratefully accept donations on-line or by mail. Please visit www.diabetes.ca to donate.

Your gently used running shoes can benefit refugees in Africa and the poor in our city. Please bring them to Race Registration & Expo to make a difference! Adult and children's gently used running shoes will be welcomed at the Sole Responsibility booth beside Registration. A toonie is requested with each pair to cover the cost of shipping.

Thanks to last year's runners, 2,500 pairs of gently used running shoes were handed out to refugees in Djibouti, a small country bordered by Somalia and Ethiopia. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) identified the need for shoes in Djibouti, a country which has seen a 36% increase in the number of refugees in the past year. In addition, your shoes helped local high school students participate in track and field, students whose families didn't have the means to buy proper shoes. Thank you for your contributions!

Your running shoes do make a difference! Please bring them to this year's Race Registration & Expo with a toonie per pair.
